Using your own car for a driving test: insurance checklist

The car must be suitable for the test and insured for the learner, the examiner and the planned journey before and after the result.

Short answer: Confirm the test-use wording with the provider and check the official vehicle rules. Plan separately for the possibility that learner cover ends the moment you pass.

Insurance checks

Confirm the registration number, exact test date and time, permitted use for a practical driving test, examiner cover and the pass-test clause. Bring the evidence format requested by the test provider or insurer.

Vehicle checks

Use the current official driving-test vehicle rules for roadworthiness, tax, MOT where required, tyres, warning lights, mirrors and identification. These checks sit alongside, not inside, the insurance decision.

Journey-home plan

Decide in advance who will drive after a pass and what cover they will rely on. If full-licence cover is not active, do not drive the vehicle home yourself.
