Can a learner drive a parent’s car with separate insurance?

Separate learner insurance can be written for practice in someone else’s car, but the vehicle, owner and supervisor must meet the chosen policy’s conditions.

Short answer: Potentially, yes. A separate learner policy may cover the learner in a parent’s car while leaving the parent’s annual policy in place. The exact interaction, vehicle eligibility and claims consequences must be checked in the current documents.

How the two policies can differ

The parent’s annual policy and the learner’s separate cover are distinct contracts. The separate policy may cover only the learner and only while they hold a provisional licence. It does not automatically change who can drive under the parent’s policy.

Questions for the car owner

Check whether the annual insurer must be told, whether the car must remain insured on its existing policy, how claims involving the learner are reported and whether the owner’s no-claims discount could still be affected.

Evidence to keep

Keep the registration details, cover dates, certificate or confirmation, provider contact information and any relevant policy wording available during the practice period.
