Passing the test

What happens to learner insurance when you pass?

Many learner policies change or end when the learner passes because the licence status and risk being covered have changed.

Short answer: Do not assume learner cover continues after a pass. Read the policy’s pass-test clause and arrange valid full-licence cover before driving as a qualified driver.

Why passing matters

A learner policy is priced and written around a provisional licence. Passing changes that status immediately, even if the photocard has not yet been replaced. The policy may end, allow only limited time, or offer a separate route to full-licence cover.

What to do on test day

Before the test, identify exactly when cover ends and whether any post-pass driving is included. Keep a plan for the car if the learner passes and cannot legally drive it home under the existing cover.

After the result

Follow the policy’s notification instructions and obtain clear confirmation of any replacement cover. A new premium or quote is not proof that cover has started; use the insurer’s confirmation and documents.
